Cedar forests within a larger biosphere reserve

The Shouf Biosphere Reserve includes the Al-Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve as well as a wider landscape of villages and other habitats. A forest visit is one way to experience it, not a complete tour of everything covered by the designation.

Barouk, Maasser el Chouf and Ain Zhalta–Bmohray are names to recognise when researching cedar access. Choose the entrance for the walk you want and confirm it with the reserve before arranging transport.

Hiking and seasons

Trail length and difficulty vary. Weather, snow, fire risk and conservation rules can affect which areas are open.

Stay on marked routes and do not remove plants, wood or other natural material.

A short cedar walk or a full hiking day

Tell the reserve your walking experience, the time available and whether you need to return to the same vehicle. Ask for total distance and ascent, not only a route name or an approximate one-way time.

A short forest route may suit families or a first visit. Longer trails can connect villages or use different access points, so they need a guide or a clearly confirmed route and a collection plan. Do not assume every trail beginning near cedars is short or gentle.

Seasons, equipment and conservation

Carry drinking water, sun protection, walking shoes and a warm layer. Higher slopes may be windy or cold when the coast is warm, and winter snow or fog can alter both trail and road access.

Follow current instructions on fire risk, pets, food and restricted areas. Stay on the path, take litter away and leave cones, plants and wood in place. Check specific requirements before professional photography or organised activities.

Stay near the entrance you will use

An overnight stay around Barouk or Maasser el Chouf can reduce an early drive from Beirut. Confirm how far the accommodation is from the actual reserve entrance, and ask about breakfast, packed food, heating and the return road.

Beiteddine and Deir el Qamar fit a separate cultural day. Use the Mount Lebanon guide to plan the Chouf as a stay with distinct walking and village time rather than a hurried list of stops.

How it differs from Cedars of God

Choose Shouf for a broader protected landscape with several route choices and nearby villages. Cedars of God is a smaller ancient grove above Bsharri, normally combined with the Qadisha area.

They are in different parts of Lebanon. Decide according to your wider itinerary and available time, and check current official advice for the precise entrance and approach road before booking.

Plan your visit

Beirut: The reserve works as a full-day excursion by car or organised transport. The chosen entrance, traffic and mountain roads determine travel time.

From a few hours to a full day, depending on the trail.

Spring to autumn, after checking weather, fire risk and trail status.
