Water emerges from the great Afqa cave and descends the cliff in cascades and falls. It forms one of the sources of Nahr Ibrahim, historically associated with the River Adonis.
The volume changes by season. Spring snowmelt can produce a powerful flow, while the site looks very different in drier periods.
Afqa contains remains of an ancient sanctuary connected with Astarte and Adonis. Nature and the stories belong together, but this is an archaeological landscape rather than a managed theme park.
Walk carefully among loose stone and remains, and follow any local restrictions.
The useful visitor experience is the cave mouth, the emerging water and the surrounding limestone landscape from a suitable viewing area. Going deeper into a cave with flowing water is a separate specialist activity and should not be treated as part of a casual waterfall visit.
Stay clear of fast water, wet boulders and unprotected drops. Recent rain or snowmelt can change the force of the spring, while summer photographs may show far less water.
Afqa requires a mountain-road journey, so agree the exact destination with your driver and allow time to return in daylight. Save the meeting point offline and ask about current parking and the walking route before leaving the road.
A short viewpoint visit can suit travellers who do not want a long hike, but do not assume the access is level or suitable for a pushchair. Ask about the final path and choose footwear for rough, potentially wet ground.
Byblos provides a coastal base for researching a trip into the inland mountains, while Afqa belongs to the Nahr Ibrahim landscape. Sharing the same river system does not make Afqa and Chouwen a short walk or easy two-stop outing.
Pick one main nature objective for the day. A later harbour meal can remain flexible around the journey, weather and current access.
Beirut: Afqa requires a car, booked driver or organised excursion. Mountain roads, weather and traffic make travel time difficult to predict.
Allow about 1–2 hours at the site in addition to travel.
