During Roman rule, Baalbek, then known as Heliopolis, developed into a vast sanctuary complex. Construction over several periods created monumental Roman architecture on a site with a much longer history.
UNESCO recognises Baalbek as one of the most important sanctuary complexes of the Roman world.
The surviving columns of the Temple of Jupiter show the scale of the complex. The Temple of Bacchus is exceptionally well preserved and richly decorated, while the Temple of Venus has a distinctive rounded plan.
Very large worked stone blocks survive in and near the temple area. Their size is documented, but popular claims about the exact ancient transport method should not be presented as established fact.
