National Museum of Beirut

The National Museum brings archaeological finds from different parts of Lebanon into one chronological setting. Stone sculpture and funerary monuments help explain the ancient cities, while smaller objects draw attention to craft, trade and daily life.

It is especially useful before visiting Byblos, Baalbek, Sidon or Tyre. Notice where objects were found: a museum label can turn a later visit to a fragmentary ruin into a more understandable picture of the place.

Give the museum about one and a half to two hours for an overview, with more time for close reading. Check which galleries are open and any photography or bag-storage arrangements before starting.

Use a pre-booked taxi through a reputable provider for an unfamiliar cross-city journey. The museum is a separate stop from Downtown and the Corniche, so group it with a realistic nearby neighbourhood plan rather than assuming all central sights are a short walk apart.

Choose a few large objects and one theme, such as how people were buried or what they traded, instead of trying to read every label. Older children may enjoy connecting the objects with sites they have already seen.

Ask staff about lifts, gallery access and toilets if visiting with a pushchair or limited mobility. Indoor galleries make the museum useful in hot or wet weather, but current opening and facilities should be confirmed before making it the day’s main plan.
